In our quiet town of Walton, W.V., the safety of our community is being jeopardized by underage kids recklessly driving side-by-sides and 4-wheelers, speeding past residential areas. This issue is deeply personal to me, as my autistic son is at risk of being injured or worse due to these dangerous activities happening right outside our doorstep.

Every day, I watch these young teenagers zoom past our house at alarming speeds, completely disregarding the safety of pedestrians and playing children. Our neighborhood streets are not meant for such high-speed vehicles, especially in the hands of those who are not equipped to handle such responsibility. It's unnerving, and there's an urgent need for change to protect all members of our community.

According to recent studies, children and adolescents often underestimate the risks involved in operating heavy machinery or vehicles, leading to increased accidents and fatalities. In fact, statistics show that ATV-related accidents are one of the leading causes of injury in children under the age of 16 in the United States. We cannot afford to wait for a tragic incident to occur before taking action.

We propose that our local law enforcement and community leaders enforce stricter regulations on the operation of these vehicles by underage drivers. Implementing measures such as mandatory safety courses, age verification checks, and increased neighborhood patrols could greatly reduce the risk of accidents. Additionally, penalties for violations should be more stringent to deter unlawful and unsafe behavior.
