The Issue

I have witnessed the serene and harmonious presence of the Vervet monkeys in our community, a testament to their non-intrusive nature and the joy they bring. Watching them live freely, one can't help but feel a deep connection and respect for their place in our shared environment.

This is why the news of the planned culling of Vervet monkeys by the Umdoni Retirement Village and Ezemvelo Kwazulu Natal Wildlife is not just alarming, but heart-wrenching.

Scheduled for Sunday, 26th October 2025, this culling threatens to take away these sentient beings who mean no harm to humans, displaying cruelty and lack of consideration for their right to coexist.

The Umdoni Retirement Village considers these monkeys to be burdens and nuisances, warranting such drastic measures. However, it is critical to highlight that these creatures are a vital part of our ecosystem. Scientific studies emphasize their role in maintaining ecological balance, aiding in seed dispersion, and supporting biodiversity. The planned culling includes pregnant mothers and newborn babies, portraying it as nothing less than murder.

Instead of resorting to violence, we must advocate for humane and ethical alternatives. Renowned wildlife conservation organizations like Monkey Helpline and Vervet Monkey Foundation have successfully implemented non-lethal methods of population control and can offer guidance to the community. Collaborating with experts can pave the way for cohabitation strategies that honor both human and animal rights. Through education and innovation, Umdoni can become a model for peaceful coexistence with wildlife, setting a positive precedent for other communities.

Let's urge the management of Umdoni Retirement Village to abandon this misguided plan and seek collaboration with established animal welfare groups. By doing so, we can ensure the protection of the Vervet monkeys and preserve the biodiversity of our community.

Please sign this petition to stand against the senseless culling of Vervet monkeys and to promote a more compassionate approach to wildlife management.
