The UK government is preparing to fund experiments that would deliberately reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth — a method known as solar geoengineering. Through a £50 million investment by the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), outdoor tests are being planned to explore radical techniques like releasing particles into the atmosphere or brightening clouds to artificially cool the planet.

 

These are not science fiction ideas — they are real, and the UK is poised to become one of the first countries to test them in open-air experiments.

 

But this is dangerous, reckless, and profoundly undemocratic.

 

 

 

Why We Must Stop This

 

 

 

1. The Environmental Risks Are Enormous

Tampering with sunlight could dramatically alter global weather systems, affect rainfall patterns, and disrupt ecosystems in unpredictable ways. We cannot allow experiments that may create new environmental disasters in the name of solving climate change.

3. It’s a Distraction from Real Climate Solutions

Reducing emissions, investing in renewable energy, and restoring natural ecosystems are proven ways to fight climate change. Solar geoengineering is a dangerous shortcut that may create more problems than it solves.

 

4. Once Started, It Might Never Stop

Scientists warn that once geoengineering begins, stopping it could cause sudden, catastrophic warming. This could lock humanity into managing a fragile and artificial climate system indefinitely.
