Stop UCP From Using Public Money on an Appeal (for a private citizen/group)
The Issue
As a resident of Alberta, I am deeply concerned and frankly appalled at the recent actions by the United Conservative Party (UCP) in regard to spending taxpayer dollars to appeal a court order that quashed the Separatists' campaign for independence. This decision was not initiated or filed by the government, yet taxpayers are now shouldering the burden for an appeal. This issue is personal to me and many others who believe in the ethical independence of the court system.
The court exists to make impartial decisions free from government interference, honoring the principles on which our legal system was built. Yet, recent events have shown a troubling departure from this foundation. The UCP's willingness to delve into this case with public funds undermines the judicial independence that our society cherishes. It sets a dangerous precedent where the government selectively chooses which legal decisions to support or contest, using resources that are otherwise meant for public service.
Furthermore, the unjust increase of the Citizen’s Petition fee to $25,000 after the Separatists' application had its fee accepted at $500 raises questions about accessibility and transparency. Was this change strategically designed to deter public participation?
We, the people of Alberta, deserve better governance—governance that upholds and respects Treaty Rights and does not manipulate legal and financial protocols for political gains.
I call upon all Albertans and supporters of justice and fairness to join me in opposing the UCP's decision to use our hard-earned money to interfere in a court decision that rightfully upheld these rights. We need to show them that we stand united in demanding a responsible and ethical use of public funds.
Please sign this petition to send a strong message to the UCP. Let them know that we will not sit idly by while taxpayer dollars are misused. Together, we can make a stand for judicial independence and ethical governance in Alberta.
