Stop Trump’s Gutting of the Roadless Rule and Protect America's National Forests

The Issue

We’re at a critical moment for America’s wild forests — and what happens next could permanently shape our public lands.

Spanning 39 states and 59 million acres, the Roadless Rule has kept some of the most intact national forests in the country free from road-building and large-scale industrial development for over two decades.

Now, that protection is being targeted for rollback — opening the door to roads and development in some of the most remote wild forests we have left.

And once roads go in, wilderness doesn’t stay wild.

This isn’t just about trees. It’s about wildlife, clean water, climate stability, and the wild public lands we all depend on.

In 2025, more than 600,000 public comments were submitted opposing efforts to roll back the Roadless Rule — one of the strongest public showings of support for forest protection in recent history.

We’re calling on decision-makers to:

👉 Protect the Roadless Rule from rollback and preserve intact national forests

👉 Safeguard wildlife habitat from road-building, logging, and fragmentation

👉 Keep science — not short-term industrial pressure — at the center of forest management decisions

WHY THIS MATTERS

🌳 Habitat Loss – Roads and logging fragment forests vital for endangered species and wildlife movement.

🔥 Wildfire Risk – Logging debris and new roads can increase ignition sources and make fire behavior more severe and unpredictable.

💧 Water Threats – Dirt and pollution from land clearing, threatens municipal drinking water supplies that serves more than 60 million people.

🌱 Carbon & Climate – Cutting or fragmenting old-growth and mature forests releases stored carbon and weakens long-term climate resilience.

🐾 Biodiversity – Rare and sensitive species lose essential protected habitat in some of the last connected wild forest landscapes.

🌲 Indigenous Importance: It helps protect sacred and culturally important landscapes and intact ecosystems used for subsistence.
