Stop treating animals as property when deciding ownership

The Issue

Our pets are not a book that can sit on anyone's shelf.  They should not be treated like property. They are living, feeling beings.  Ownership should be based on many factors - not just who the original owner was.

Where and with who did the animal live?  Who took care of the animal? Who paid for their food, grooming, vet bills? Who are they bonded with?  Who can provide the best home? Is the animal a service animal that provides support to a specific person? What is in the best interest of the animal?

Currently an original owner can come back at anytime and will win in court even if they abandoned the animal, neglected it or willfully gave them up.

The Ontario Legislative Assembly needs to change this law. Our pets are our family and should be treated as such.
