IT COST THE CITY $46,029 TO RUN THE CAMERAS AT EDGEMONT.

I've been trying to figure out some of the numbers I've been hearing from the city about how much revenue has been collected from the school zone camera fines in Edgewood. They weren't making any sense since so many infractions were issued.

For those who don't want to follow the math, long story short, the city collected:

$562,288 from the citizenry and gave

$399,000 to the camera company, and paid
$92,425 to Pierce County District Court

which left only
$70,863 for the city in 2024

Verra Mobility received 71%
PCDC received 16.5%
Edgewood kept 12.5%

EVEN WORSE, it cost Edgewood $46,029 to run the cameras at Edgemont.

The city collected:

 $81,496 from the citizenry

and gave:

$114,000 to the camera company, and paid
$13,525 to Pierce County District Court which means:

$81,496 collected  - $114,000 camera fees - $13,525 court fees = -( $46,029) to run the cameras at Edgemont.

Another interesting number is the one that shows 1,213 of the 4,910 infractions issued were never responded to. (4,910 issued - 3,697 processed = 1,213 no responses)

I'm sure Verra Mobility and the folks at the Edgewood appreciate the people who do decide to pay...

No further reading is necessary however this is the transcript of what I told the council on May 27, 2025

"I've been trying to figure out some of the numbers I've been hearing from the city about how much revenue has been collected from the school zone camera fines in Edgewood.  They weren't making any sense since so many infractions were issued."

"Today I've given you a response from Pierce County District Court listing the number of infractions it processed in 2024.  The first group is the number of paid infractions and the second group is the number of dismissed infractions."

"So the city says it issued 4910 infractions in 2024. "

"The court says it processed

2443 for under 30 mph
 627 for over 30 mph
for a total of 3070 paid.

They also dismissed 627 infractions.  (Same as the over 30 group I didn't mix those #s up)"

"3070 paid infractions and 627 dismissed infractions equals 3,697 processed infractions."

"That means 4,910 issued - 3,697 processed = 1,213 no responses"

"(2,443 under 30 * 166)  +   ( 627 over 30 * 250)  = $562,288 collected by the city"

"At $25 each, the city paid the court 76,750 to process the paid infractions and 15,675 for the dismissed infractions for a total of 92,425"

"562,288 - 399,000 camera fees  = 163,288  - 92,425 court fees  =  leaves only 70,863 (12%) for the city's safety programs.  Verra Mobility got 70%"

"The Edgemont numbers were really interesting."

"(381 tickets under 30mph * $166)  + (73 over 30mph  * $250) = $81,496   87 infractions were dismissed."

"$81,496 - $114,000 camera fees - $13,525 court fees =

means it cost the city $46,029 to run the cameras at Edgemont.
