Aggiornamento sulla petizioneSTOP TRAFFIC CAMERA PHOTO ENFORCEMENT IN EDGEWOODI think the citizens of Edgewood deserve an explanation.

We've reached 778 signatures.  Thanks to everyone and we've had a couple of mentions in the media now.

I'm concerned I might be becoming the noise in the room that gets ignored.  Consider emailing the council to let them know you are watching and expect an explanation. It's very easy for the council to brush off one person who shows up once every couple of weeks.

I gave each of the council members 5 pictures from a series of 90 time lapse pictures I took at the west bound 8th Street school zone at Hedden Elementary.  This is a link to the complete set.

https://edgewoodschoolcams.com/heddenSlideshow.htm  (There was not one person or student in any of the 90 pictures.)

This is pretty much what I told the council during the 3 minute comment time I was allowed.  This is a bit long again so if you don't want to read it all just understand that there is no evidence the city is "ensuring the safety" of anyone and it is starting to appear that there are a lot of tickets being issued that aren't being paid.  There are links at the bottom for you to email the council.

"Tonight I've given you 5 pictures out of a set of time lapse pictures I took of the west bound 8th street school zone over by Hedden.  Each of you received a different set."

"I've also given you the infraction data from a public record request my neighbor made."

"The good news is that the city didn't lose any money at Hedden. You'll notice the 2 other cameras at Hedden totaled a little less than the one West Bound camera at that 300 foot long school zone.  The city collects more revenue from that one camera than any other in the area."

  • 143 infractions were issued WB 8th at Hedden for February 2025
  • That's 5 pages of infractions for one camera compared to 1 and 1/4 pages
I gave you from the one camera at Edgemont last meeting.
  • 50 were issued while kids were sitting behind their desks.
33 were issued for 24 or 25 MPH
35 were issued for 31 MPH or more

"The speed limit on 8th is 35mph."

"So if you do the math you'll see the city issued $18,353 worth of infractions from that one camera for one month.  And it issued $30,387 worth of infractions from all three Hedden cameras."

"The city website has been changed  now but it has always been the claim that "Ensuring the safety of our students walking to and from our local schools is a top priority."  Even if you take the new version "Ensuring the safety of our students is a top priority."  I'm left scratching my head."

"If you take a look at the pictures I've given you, each of you has a different set, you will not see one person or student.  NOT ONE."

"So I'm left, and I'm not the only one, wondering how the city is "Ensuring the safety of our students walking to and from Hedden" when there aren't any students around."

"Even if you take the new version "Ensuring the safety of our students."  How you are doing that? I think the citizens of Edgewood deserve an explanation."

"So that was the good news.  The city's accountant reported the city collected $100,000 from all the cameras in 2024.  I have no reason to doubt that."

"The bad news is that if the city issued $30,000 worth of infractions at Hedden AFTER Verra Mobility and Pierce County District Court were paid for one month, how come the city only collected $100,000 for the whole year of 2024."

"If the assumption is made that Hedden averages $30,000 a month and school is in session for 10 months then the city should collect $300,000 per year from the Hedden school zones alone.  There are a lot of infractions that aren't being paid."

"We have a request into the county court to see how many infractions were processed and how many were dismissed in 2024.  I'll get back to you on that."

You can email the council members or show up at a meeting to have your voice be heard.  It actually is appears the council is representing the camera company instead of the citizens of Edgewood.
