The Issue

The historic village section of Muizenberg is surrounded by one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in southern Cape Town. Enormous volumes of traffic flow East-West and North-South around and through our village every day. Our roads were not designed for this volume, and drivers use our narrow residential streets as a way around congestion. This involves rampant traffic crime, including reckless speeding, driving the wrong way down one-way streets, ignoring stop signs, and blocking streets and intersections. The situation on Albertyn Road is particularly bad, with most motorists completely ignoring all stop streets and blocking intersections with impunity.

Residents of Muizenberg Village have repeatedly asked the City to combat this rampant criminality with regular Traffic Branch patrols. But these requests have fallen on deaf ears. All the while, the lives of local residents are being disrupted and threatened.

We are no longer prepared to remain silent and abused. The signatories of this Petition demand that the City of Cape Town fulfill its responsibilities by intervening in the traffic mayhem in and around Muizenberg Village. The petition itself will be submitted to the CoCT sub-council at the first available opportunity.
