Stop Toxic Herbicide Spraying in Connecticut Lakes

Stop Toxic Herbicide Spraying in Connecticut Lakes
The Issue
I grew up on the serene shores of Lake Pocotopaug and currently cherish my life on the beautiful Moodus Reservoir. Like so many, my life revolves around these precious bodies of water which are surrounded by countless families, animals, wildlife and farms. This is why I'm deeply alarmed and heartbroken to learn that Connecticut is about to commence spraying toxic herbicides, specifically diquat, into our beloved waterways. They aim to tackle an invasive weed, but in the process, will endanger everything else in the ecosystem, including our communities.
The scheduled commencement after July 4th presents an urgent threat not just to the plants they intend to eliminate but to all living beings relying on these waters. Diquat, a toxic chemical, presents significant risks of poisoning not just to wildlife, but it can seep into drinking water, impacting human health. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, excessive exposure to diquat can lead to severe health problems.
These waterways are the bloodline of the community. They provide not just beauty and recreation, but also sustain agriculture, wildlife, and our very way of life. Poisoning them in an effort to solve an invasive species problem is shortsighted and dangerous.
We must urge Connecticut state officials to reconsider this harmful approach and opt for environmentally safe solutions. Alternative methods, such as mechanical weed removal, biological control techniques, or even more controlled and precise application methods, should be pursued. Solutions that harm indiscriminately are not solutions at all and will only lead to long-term damage to this treasured region.
Please join me in the call to protect our lakes and rivers. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against environmental negligence and advocating for the preservation of our cherished waters. We need sensible, safe, and sustainable solutions that ensure the well-being of our ecosystems and communities alike. Sign now and help stop the toxic spraying before it begins!
