I am an organic farmer in West Bend, Wisconsin. My livelihood depends on the purity of our well water and the quality of our air. The proposed zoning change that would permit a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) to be built on 135 acres of land threatens both these vital resources.

CAFOs are known for their negative impact on local environments. They generate significant amounts of waste which can contaminate groundwater sources, including wells like mine that provide drinking water and irrigation for crops (EPA). Furthermore, they contribute to poor air quality by releasing harmful gases such as methane and ammonia into the atmosphere (CDC).

Moreover, CAFOs have been linked to antibiotic-resistant bacteria due to their routine use of antibiotics in animal feed (WHO). This poses a serious health risk not only for those living nearby but also for consumers who may ingest these bacteria through contaminated meat products.

Lastly, as an animal lover and advocate for ethical farming practices, I am deeply concerned about the welfare of animals within these operations. The conditions are often crowded and stressful for animals which is not only cruel but can also lead to disease outbreaks.

For all these reasons we must resist this zoning change. Our community's health, environment and ethical standards should not be compromised. Please sign this petition to protect West Bend from the detrimental effects of CAFOs.
