The Issue

If you drive down Standifer Gap, you’ve seen the big hill of dirt. The property owners want to change the zoning for the property from residential to commercial. The owners say that the property is better suited for a commercial area because more homes will increase traffic.

If the zoning changes, the proposed development is to build two strip malls with space for up to 14 stores such as a wine store, salons, ice cream shop, and so on. Behind the strip malls would be a large self-storage facility. Retail stores and  a storage facility would increase traffic but also potentially raise noise and pollution levels, diminishing the quality of life we currently enjoy. Moreover, the increased commercial activity could negatively impact property values, as new homeowners may be less inclined to live near busy retail spots. This change would prioritize short-term economic gains over the long-term well-being of our neighborhoods. (Please note: This is a proposal. No businesses have committed to the projected strip malls. No storage company has made a commitment either.)

After meeting with the property owners Thursday night, 5/21, there is a large group of people in the area against the zone change. We do not need more retail shops in a residential area. We do not need another self-storage facility.

I urge community members to consider the implications of this change. Please join me in signing this petition to stop the zoning change on Standifer Gap Rd.
