The Issue

In Draper, Utah, there is a current proposal to build a new grocery store across from Harmons, in an area presently zoned for residential living. This proposition stands to affect us negatively in many practical ways. We want denser housing development.

Traffic Concerns: This particular site is a major hub for traffic entering and exiting the city. An additional commercial entity right across from an existing grocery store is proven by traffic study to exacerbate traffic congestion, creating potential hazards and frustrations for residents and commuters.

The traffic study conducted as part of a previous proposal has shown clear limitations and failures. It does not adequately address the reality of increased vehicles and congestion that will come with another grocery outlet. Current infrastructure is simply not equipped to handle such a substantial increase in traffic.

Economic Impact: The economic implications of this plan should not be ignored either. By introducing a new grocery store in such proximity to an existing one, there's a significant risk of cannibalising tax revenue from the already established store. Rather than contributing to economic growth, this could potentially dilute existing tax revenues, harming the local economy instead of improving it.

Housing: Denser residential development supports growth without overwhelming roads or nearby neighborhoods. It meets community needs without creating problems we’ll have to fix later.

We must advocate for smart growth that respects our city’s character and practical needs. This proposal does neither. Please join us in voicing our concerns to Draper City Council to halt the rezoning and development of this unnecessary commercial project.
