The Issue

For decades, Nigeria has received billions of dollars in loans and development assistance intended to improve infrastructure, healthcare, education, electricity, security, and the general welfare of its people. Unfortunately, much of these funds have failed to translate into meaningful improvements in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians. Instead, there have been repeated allegations and documented instances of corruption, mismanagement, diversion of public funds, inflated contracts, and systemic inefficiencies.

These funds were supposed to create positive change, lifting millions out of poverty and transforming the nation into a beacon of prosperity for Africa. Yet, the reality starkly contrasts with the aspirations. Schools are still underfunded, hospitals lack essential medicines and equipment, and many roads remain in disrepair. Nigeria, despite being rich in resources, continues to grapple with persistent blackouts, inadequate healthcare services, and an education system that doesn't meet the needs of its growing population.

The presence of systemic corruption has undermined the original intent of each loan, eroding trust and perpetuating a cycle where borrowed funds end up profiting a select few rather than the nation's people. Without stringent accountability and transparency mechanisms in place, additional loans may only exacerbate these challenges, rather than resolve them.

It is vital for the World Bank to reconsider its financial support structure for Nigeria. Instead of providing new loans, the focus should shift towards enhancing governance and accountability within the country's existing financial management frameworks. The World Bank ought to foster partnerships that empower local communities, improve oversight, and ensure that any financial assistance leads to tangible benefits for all Nigerians.

We urge the World Bank to freeze all new loan approvals to Nigeria until these concerns are sufficiently addressed. By doing so, the World Bank can signify its commitment to uphold integrity and support meaningful, long-term development in Nigeria. Please join us in advocating for a change that prioritizes the well-being of Nigerian citizens over inefficient funding allocations riddled with corruption.

Sign this petition to demand change and accountability in how Nigeria receives and manages international financial assistance. Together, we can push for a new, transparent approach that truly benefits the people of Nigeria.
