The Issue

The red shaded areas show the extent of woodland proposed for felling at Portmoak Moss, fundamentally changing a well-used and much-loved community space.

The Woodland Trust’s current plans for Portmoak Moss, Scotlandwell, would result in the large-scale felling of woodland, destroying habitats and permanently altering a well-used and much-loved community space.

While peatland restoration is important, these proposals prioritise one environmental goal at the expense of woodland, wildlife, and importantly community wellbeing, without properly exploring or discussing less destructive alternatives.

Portmoak Moss is valued for its accessible, sheltered woodland walks and the wildlife it supports, including red squirrels, green and great spotted woodpeckers, brown hares, owls and birds of prey. Once felled, this woodland cannot simply be replaced.

We call on the Woodland Trust to halt the felling, listen to local voices, and pursue a more balanced and responsible approach.
