Stop the Willow Project!

The Issue

The Willow Project is a 30-year scheme aiming to produce 180,000 barrels of oil a day. The project would involve drilling down to use the petroleum stored on the Alaskan North Slope.

Evidence has shown that the project will produce over 278 million tonnes of green house gases over a 30-year period. This is equal to the combined emissions from 2 million passenger cars over the same time period. This will take us further away from reducing green house gas emissions.

The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world. Oceans around the world are turning acidic, villages are being washed into the sea and wildlife is suffering. In 2019, seabirds off the coast of Alaska suffered massive die-offs for the fifth consecutive year. Over 9,000 birds washed ashore along the Alaskan coast. These birds rely on cold water-dependent prey, unfortunately the ice-dependent ecosystem is shifting and their prey is not as available as they once were. The Willow Project will be a carbon bomb that will hasten the Arctics destruction.

Alaskan Natives who inhabit the area have expressed their concerns about the health and environmental impacts this could have to their home. The noise, traffic and pollution will disrupt ecosystems that the locals rely upon to live. This project will may also threaten the Caribou population, which is a vital resource that the native communities rely on.

The fact that the government granted $6 billion for combating climate change and protecting oceans, but could grant the same amount towards the Willow Project to essentially destroy the planet is ironic.

Allowing the drilling plan to go forward is a major infringement on promises made to stop new oil drilling. Greenpeace responded to this project as a "climate catastrophe".

If we do not act now to stop the Willow Project more animals will die out, Alaskan Natives may lose vital resources needed to survive, further villages might get washed away and we will have an increase in green house gas emissions, which we have been fighting to reduce.
