You might be wondering what the willow project is so I’m here to tell you and why we need to stop it.

Project Willow is a plan curated by the okie company ConocoPhillips to drill into Alaskas western Arctic. This includes drilling up to 250 wells in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. It also includes building up to 5 drill pads, a processing facility, hundreds of miles of pipelines, at least one airstrip and a gravel mine. 

The Arctic is already warming 4x faster because of global warming. The willow project over the next 30 years will pump between 278 and 287 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution. This is going to cause irreversible effects to the Arctic region and will accelerate the process of melting permafrost. When permafrost melts it releases CO2 and methane into the atmosphere also ancient viruses and bacteria can thaw and have serious consequences. 

If this project goes ahead the construction will impact many animals and plants. Project willow will expand into Teshekpuk lake which will harm many animals. This development site is also 36 miles away from an indigenous community Nuiqsut that is already surround by oil and gas activity. The pollution that is coming from the project will contaminate drinking water and cut residents from their food sources. Environment advocates worry that the willow project will pave the way for even more industrial expansion into the Arctic.

All of these terrible things are consequences of the willow project and it could bring us to a point of no return. This is our future and we need to save it for us and for our home. We need to stand together and say no to the willow project!
