Stop the Willow Project
The Issue
ConocoPhillips’ Willow Project is a massive and decadeslong oil drilling venture on Alaska’s North Slope in the National Petroleum Reserve, which is owned by the federal government. ConocoPhillips is a Houston-based energy company that has been exploring and drilling for oil in Alaska for years.
The area where the project is planned holds up to 600 million barrels of oil. That oil would take years to reach the market since the project has yet to be constructed.

Willow was proposed by ConocoPhillips and originally approved by the Trump administration in 2020. ConocoPhillips was initially approved to construct five drill pads, which the Biden administration ultimately reduced to three. Three pads, however, will allow the company to drill about 90% of the oil they are pursuing.
Using the oil from Willow would produce the equivalent of more 263 million tons of greenhouse gasses over the project's 30-year life, leading to more greenhouse gas emissions than any other project on public American land. This will accelerate climate change, putting animals’ lives and habitats at risk.
Stop the willow project from proceeding. The willow project alone would release approximately 9.2 million tons of carbon pollution each year. Not only would carbon pollution increase but there will be a great loss of wetland. Polar bears will lose 619 acres of their habitat , while birds surrounding Alaska's North Slope will lose 17,000 acres. These factors greatly impact the ecosystem and environment in the surrounding location of Alaska .
