STOP the Westport Expansion: SAVE the Mah Meri of Pulau Carey!
STOP the Westport Expansion: SAVE the Mah Meri of Pulau Carey!
The Issue
To: The Management of Westport Klang and the Government of Selangor
Our home is not a construction site. Our culture is not a museum exhibit.
For over a century, the Mah Meri tribe of Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Kurau has lived in harmony with the mangroves and the sea.
Gazetted since 1921, our village is the heartbeat of our identity. But now, a massive 15km port expansion threatens to swallow our land, destroy our livelihoods, and erase our history forever.
The developers are moving forward without our consent. They have failed to hold official meetings or transparent negotiations with our 238 residents.
This is a direct violation of the United Nations principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and the Aboriginal Peoples Act 134.
What is at stake?
- Our Survival: Fishing is our only source of income. Reclamation will pollute our waters and kill the biodiversity we depend on.
- UNESCO Heritage: Our world-renowned wood carvings depend on Nyireh Batu and Pulai wood found only in our mangroves. If the forests go, our art dies.
- Our Ancestors: Sea reclamation will destroy the sacred sites used for our Hari Moyang ceremonies, severing our connection to our spirits.
- Empty Promises: We are told this expansion brings 100,000 jobs, but without formal training, we will be left as mere "observers behind the fence" while our land is exploited.
Our Demands
We, the undersigned, demand that all work on the Westport expansion be HALTED IMMEDIATELY until the following conditions are met and legally secured:
- Direct Negotiation : Immediate official and transparent discussions with the JKKKOA of Sungai Kurau.
- Legal Land Protection: A written guarantee that our ancestral land and settlement will remain undisturbed.
- Environmental Safeguards: A clear mitigation plan to prevent river pollution and protect the mangrove ecosystem.
- Fair Compensation: Direct financial compensation for coastal fishers and the construction of paved roads for our community.
- Community Investment: Meaningful CSR including clean water, electricity, healthcare, and specialized skill training for our youth.
THE BOTTOM LINE: No expansion until our rights are respected and our demands are met. We are not against progress, however, we will not allow "progress" to mean the extinction of the Mah Meri people.
