Stop the Waste Indiana! Require Stores to Donate Usable Food, Clothing, and Supplies

The Issue

Every year, grocery stores, retailers and restaurants across the U.S. throw away more than 40 billion pounds of food that’s still edible, enough to feed tens of millions of people. Meanwhile, one in ten Hoosiers struggles with hunger, and shelters across Indiana report shortages of clothing, bedding, and pet supplies.

Perfectly good items end up in landfills simply because it’s easier to toss them than to donate them. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Other states like California, Vermont, and New York have already passed laws requiring large grocery stores to donate usable food rather than destroy it. France even made it illegal for stores to throw away edible food. And it’s working.

Indiana can do better. This petition calls for the Indiana General Assembly to pass a “No Waste, Safe Donation Act” that would:

✅ Require stores and restaurants to donate safe, unsold food, clothing, and supplies to local nonprofits and shelters

✅ Offer tax credits to businesses that donate

✅ Protect donors under the existing Good Samaritan Food Donation Act

✅ Encourage cities and counties to organize volunteer pickup programs

It’s a simple idea with huge impact. Less waste, fewer hungry families, more help for local charities and shelters.

Please sign and share this petition to help Indiana lead with compassion. Together, we can stop the waste and start the change. 💚
