For many residents of Wanneroo, off-leash dog exercising at public parks is an essential part of our daily routine, bringing immeasurable joy to both dogs and their owners alike. Unfortunately, the Wanneroo City Council is considering a ban on this cherished activity, a decision that would unfairly penalize responsible dog owners and fundamentally alter the community's dynamic.

As a law-abiding dog walker myself, I cherish the moments of freedom and companionship shared with my dog at our local park. The looming ban would mean having to venture to already overcrowded fenced-in dog parks, stripping us of the convenience and joy we currently enjoy. It's crucial to address the true issue at hand: the minority of dog owners who don't clean up after their pets or allow them to roam unsupervised. Punishing all dog owners will not resolve this problem.

Off-leash parks are not just recreational spaces; they are communities within a community. They offer a place where not only dogs but also people connect, socialize, and exercise. By imposing this ban, the council risks damaging these valuable community bonds and diminishing the overall quality of life in Wanneroo.

Instead of a blanket ban, we urge Wanneroo City Council to explore alternative solutions that address the irresponsible behavior of a minority without compromising the well-being and lifestyle of responsible dog owners. Enhanced enforcement of current regulations and increased educational programs about responsible dog ownership could effectively target the problem without undue hardship on dedicated pet lovers.
