Stop the Use of GoGuardian in BVSD Schools

The Issue

I am a student in Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) and I feel my privacy is constantly invaded by the use of GoGuardian, an "educational" technology software. This software, while marketed as a tool to help educators manage their classrooms, has far-reaching implications for student privacy. It allows teachers and administrators to monitor students' online activities in real time, even when they are not on school grounds.

This level of surveillance is invasive and unnecessary. According to a study by the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado Boulder, excessive monitoring can create an environment that harms rather than helps students' learning experiences. The report states that "surveillance practices can undermine trust in schools" and "can lead to self-censorship and increased stress among students."

Furthermore, it's important to note that other school districts have successfully implemented alternative methods for ensuring digital safety without infringing on student privacy rights. For instance, Denver Public Schools uses a system that only flags inappropriate content rather than allowing full access to all browsing activity.

We believe BVSD should prioritize our right to privacy while still maintaining an effective learning environment. We urge them to stop using GoGuardian or any similar intrusive tools immediately.

Please sign this petition if you agree with us that our education should not come at the cost of our personal privacy.
