The Issue

In our pursuit of safety and security, we often grapple with the difficult balance between protection and privacy. This petition arises from a deep concern about the ongoing expansion of flock cameras across Colorado communities. While these cameras are marketed as a tool to help law enforcement tackle crime, they also introduce significant privacy challenges that deserve urgent attention.

Flock cameras are designed to capture vehicle license plates and other identifiable details, aiding police in tracking vehicles potentially connected with criminal activities. However, the cost of this convenience is a chilling invasion into our daily lives. For every criminal that might be caught, thousands of ordinary citizens find their movements meticulously logged.

The implication of constant surveillance is stark. It sets a potential precedent for a broader erosion of civil liberties, where people feel constantly watched and judged. How long before this technology, initially aimed at vehicles, extends to individuals on foot or cyclists? Privacy laws in the United States have historically safeguarded citizens against undue intrusion, but flock cameras present a new challenge to these established protections.

Moreover, studies have shown mixed results in the actual efficacy of these cameras in significantly reducing crime rates. The Center for Privacy and Technology at Georgetown University highlights concerns that such surveillance disproportionately affects communities of color, exacerbating existing social injustices.

Colorado is known for its vibrant communities and forward-thinking spirit. We deserve a public discourse on whether flock cameras align with our values. It's imperative that we set clear guidelines and oversight mechanisms for technologies that monitor our daily activities.

I urge lawmakers, local councils, and community leaders to halt the deployment of flock cameras until we can ensure that our privacy is not sacrificed at the altar of security. Together, we can advocate for solutions that genuinely prioritise public safety while respecting individual rights.

Please sign this petition to make your voice heard. Let’s draw a definitive line that protects our privacy and maintains our freedom.

Thank you to everyone who has raised concerns about the use of Flock cameras in Colorado. I take privacy, civil liberties, and appropriate oversight of surveillance technology seriously. I plan to introduce legislation next session addressing many of the concerns regarding Flock cameras, and I am currently working with stakeholders to define the bill’s scope and provisions. — Ava Flanell State Representative House District 14 [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
