I am deeply concerned about the privacy implications of the Flock ALPR camera systems in Glocester, Rhode Island. As a member of this community, the preservation of our privacy rights is paramount. These surveillance systems, if left unchecked, have the potential to infringe upon our civil liberties by collecting and storing sensitive data without our explicit consent. Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras capture not just the license plates of vehicles, but also other identifying information which may be stored indefinitely. This system lacks comprehensive oversight and proper legislative governance in Rhode Island, posing a significant risk to our rights to privacy. Allowing these cameras in Glocester puts citizens at risk of misuse or abuse of our personal data. Currently, Rhode Island does not have adequate laws to regulate the use of ALPR systems, leaving our community vulnerable to privacy violations. Surveillance technology should not be deployed without stringent controls to ensure citizen protection. Unfortunately, the absence of such regulatory measures means our data could be accessed or misused by unauthorized parties, magnifying the threat to our personal privacy. Moreover, studies have shown that the presence of mass surveillance technology contributes very little to enhancing public safety, and instead increases public skepticism and fearfulness. Our town deserves measures that genuinely promote security without sacrificing the fundamental right to privacy. We must urge our council members to reject Flock ALPR systems and end their contract in Glocester. We need to protect our privacy by rejecting technologies that are not subject to adequate scrutiny or legislative oversight. Join me in standing for a community where privacy is respected and valued.
