The Issue

Living in Boldon, the news of the development of 263 houses at North Farm (off Boker Lane) strikes close to home. This project threatens to add immense strain to our already overloaded local services, such as doctors, schools, and parking facilities. Most critically, it risks aggravating our sewage system, emitting further pollution into our cherished rivers and affecting the South Shields Little Haven. I am gathering as much evidence as possible to prove this could be detrimental to uor community and current residents, to ask for reconsideration on the approved plans.

Currently, the development's plan earmarks only 30% of the houses as affordable, an inadequate measure for truly meeting community needs. Notably, this would be at the expense of our limited green space, which serves as a precious environmental and recreational resource for Boldon residents and the wider community. This loss is not minor; it affects our community’s health, well-being, and ecological balance.

Moreover, the Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), which are already overflowing illegally, and contribute to river pollution, will only be strained further by an increase in sewage waste produced by hundreds of new households. This results in a significant environmental cost and risks exacerbating pollution in our rivers and coastlines.

In England, developments should meet rigorous standards not only in housing availability but also in ensuring that infrastructure can sustain new growth without compromising environmental integrity. We have a moral obligation to ensure that development projects respect our community's needs and ecological limits.

We must urge the local authorities and planners to reconsider or reconfigure the proposed development at North Farm. This space could instead be utilized for community-led initiatives or smaller-scale projects that do not sacrifice our green spaces, overburden local services, or damage the environment.
