Stop the torture of women with cancer at HMP Bronzefield

Stop the torture of women with cancer at HMP Bronzefield
The Issue
At HMP Bronzefield, women with cancer are chained during treatment, denied hospital care, left to bleed in their cells, and forced to endure filthy, malnourishing conditions. Emergency bells go unanswered, and basic medical rights are ignored. This is not justice, it’s systemic cruelty. The View CiC, with survivors and allies, are calling for urgent reform to end this abuse, guarantee humane medical care, and protect the right to life and dignity for every woman behind bars. Sign now to demand change.
Women are held in prison at His Majesty’s Pleasure. King Charles has recently undergone treatment with the very best medical expertise available. Why then are so many women with cancer being left to die behind bars?
A 2012 to 2017 non-theft oncology study found prisoners in England are 28% less likely to receive curative treatment and suffer 9% higher mortality. A 2023 big issue investigation found women in prison faced medication shortages, protracted delays and unsanitary conditions. Nearly half of English prisons have been rated as inadequate for health care provision. The Royals have had access to the best care available. Meanwhile, women behind bars are dehumanized and neglected while fighting to access even the most basic medical support. Your support of our petition will honor these women's journeys and elevate this national imperative that dignity, care and justice must never be lost, behind prison walls. This torture, both psychological and physical, is being implemented in the king's name and funded by the public. We know that you will not endorse this now that you know of this cruelty.
Healthcare at HMP Bronzefield is run by 2 nursing practitioners, Harriet Tizard and Dave Wilkinson . Both are being investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The contract is provided by CNWL NHS Foundation Trust which is paid to provide 24hrs healthcare but that is a lie
Women are at HMP Bronzefield, a private prison run by Sodexo ltd, a French catering company, women with cancer are living and dying in appalling conditions that breach the most basic human rights. They are chained during intimate examinations, denied life-saving hospital treatment, forced to bleed in their cells without help, and left in filthy conditions with little to no nutrition.
This is systemic neglect and cruelty, not justice.
After 7PM, just one nurse is left to care for over 500 women. Emergency cell bells go unanswered. Women miss crucial chemotherapy and radiotherapy appointments because the prison fails to take them to appointments. They are denied special diets despite malnourishing food, cut off from cancer helplines, and refused even basic dignity items like clean clothes, deodorant, and sanitary products. Safeguarding warnings from Surrey ambulance service have been ignored.
The View CiC, supported by survivors and allies, is amplifying the voices of women enduring this torture:
Grace, a former military officer, had surgery while handcuffed and was left chained in a hospital gown to sponge-bathe with an infected drain. She has never been told what type of cancer she has and was refused a double mastectomy despite requesting one.
Khadija died from stage 4 stomach cancer after months of medical dismissal. She was imprisoned for 18 months while awaiting extradition, only to be released too late for treatment.
Kim bled so heavily from untreated cervical cancer that her bed was soaked in blood. She was told to “prove” she was bleeding before being given help, and has been denied radiotherapy.
Farah has missed 22 hospital appointments due to prison neglect. She was falsely declared in remission and chained during examinations. Her life expectancy has been drastically cut, an avoidable outcome.
Mayan, with only months to live, recently missed life-extending proton beam therapy because the prison failed to take her to hospital. She remains on remand.
Many of these women are serving short sentences or are awaiting deportation. Some are on remand for non-violent offences. None were sentenced to die in prison.
We demand:
Immediate, humane medical care for all women in prison, no chains, no delays.
Access to cancer specialists, emergency numbers and nutritional support.
Mandatory hospital escorts without restraints for diagnostic or life-saving treatment.
Medical care in prison to match community standards.
A full review of the Bail Act to protect the right to life and freedom from inhumane treatment.
Every day of delay costs lives. These women are mothers, sisters, daughters and they deserve dignity, care, and justice.
Sign this petition to demand the Ministry of Justice, Sodexo limited, and CNWL NHS Foundation Trust act now to stop the torture of women with cancer at HMP Bronzefield.
