Background: In many states, driver’s licenses are suspended when individuals fall behind on child support payments. While the intention is to encourage compliance, this practice can have unintended consequences, affecting not only the noncustodial parent but also their ability to work, provide for their children, and maintain a stable life.

Petition Statement: We, the undersigned, urge lawmakers and relevant authorities to reconsider the automatic suspension of driver’s licenses due to unpaid child support. We believe that this punitive measure disproportionately impacts struggling parents and does not effectively address the underlying issue.

Reasons for Reversal:

Financial Hardship:

License suspension exacerbates financial hardship for parents who are already struggling to meet their child support obligations.
Without a valid driver’s license, finding employment becomes more challenging, perpetuating the cycle of unpaid support.

Alternative Solutions:

Rather than punitive measures, we propose alternative solutions:Payment Plans: Work with parents to establish realistic payment plans.
Education and Counseling: Provide resources to improve financial literacy and parenting skills.
Community Service: Allow noncustodial parents to contribute through community service instead of license suspension.
