The Issue

The peaceful, natural charm of the Kelvin riverbank has been a refuge and source of inspiration for many of the nearby residents over the years. However, this cherished space is now under threat from a proposed six to eight-storey student accommodation building on Otago Lane, being built off of Kelvin riverbank.

The riverbank along Kelvinbridge is home to numerous species that contribute to its ecological diversity. The construction of this new development could devastate these habitats, leading to a decrease in local biodiversity. Wildlife corridors such as these riverbanks are crucial for the movement and survival of urban wildlife, and their disruption could have long-term negative impacts on the city's environmental health.

Moreover, it’s necessary to highlight that Glasgow already has a surplus of existing student accommodations, many of these are unoccupied and could be repurposed without encroaching on vital green spaces. City planning should focus on optimising the use of these existing structures rather than building anew in areas that should remain untouched.

We urge the Glasgow Land Services, the responsible Danehurst Development Limited and stakeholders to reconsider this development proposal. As outlined in several news articles including this one, many residents in the area have already voiced their objections.

Please sign this petition to stop the construction of the student accommodation on Otago Lane and to help preserve the invaluable biodiversity and unique character of Kelvinbridge for generations to come. Your signature can make a difference and protect what is truly irreplaceable.
