Stop the strike action at Wanstead High School

The Issue

UPDATE 2:

This petition has now been superceded by our second petition, which can be found here.

UPDATE:

The NEU have since released details of their demands and have arranged a zoom meeting to respond to parents' concerns.

*******************************

We, as parents and guardians of current pupils, are seriously concerned about the seven days of strike action called at Wanstead High School and its impact on pupils’ education.

We recognise that teaching is a demanding profession and that workload and wellbeing are pressures facing schools and teachers nationally.

We call on all sides to make a determined effort to resolve the ongoing dispute, to support improvements at the school and to prioritise the education and well being of our children.

We are disappointed that the local NEU has apparently not accepted offers of regular meetings with the head teacher and has instead resorted to strike action. We are concerned at the reports of late tabling of demands and non-attendance at scheduled meetings.

We call on the NEU to:

  • make public the full and detailed demands of the local NEU in relation to Wanstead High School;
  • confirm that in the NEU’s opinion these issues, in the context of Wanstead High School, merit the disruption caused by the proposed strike action including the lost days of learning for students and the vast amount of leadership time spent on these negotiations (which could be spent on school improvement);
  • confirm that they are committed to working constructively and in good faith with the head teacher and the local authority to bring about improvements for the whole school community; and to
  • confirm that teachers will be allowed to to support exam classes without penalty so that children at Wanstead High School are not disadvantaged in national exams.
