Stop the Squeeze: Demand a Reduction in Edmonton’s Property Taxes Now
The Issue
We, the residents and property owners of Edmonton, call on the City Council and Mayor Amarjeet Sohi to immediately address the unsustainable rise in property taxes. Edmonton families are already under pressure from inflation, stagnant wages, and rising living costs. Property taxes have become a tipping point.
The Reality We’re Facing:
* Average Edmonton household income (after tax): ~$5,833/month
* Typical monthly expenses:
* Mortgage/Rent: $1,800 – $2,400
* Utilities: $350 – $500
* Groceries: $800 – $1,000
* Transportation: $400 – $600
* Childcare: $800 – $1,200
* Property Taxes: $300 – $600
* Other necessities: $500+
This means many families are living paycheque to paycheque or going into debt just to stay afloat. Property taxes are no longer manageable—they are a serious threat to economic stability and home-ownership in Edmonton.
We Demand the City of Edmonton to:
- Review and reduce current property tax rates immediately.
- Improve transparency on how tax revenues are allocated.
- Implement protections for low- and middle-income households (tax caps or freezes).
- Hold public consultations before approving any future property tax increases.
Edmonton must remain livable—not just for the wealthy, but for working families, seniors, and small business owners. Let’s hold our leaders accountable.
