Stop the SPS Flexible Schedule!

The Issue

On October 23rd, Dr. Lucero sent out an email to members of the Stamford Public Schools community. It detailed the plans for SPS's new Flexible Schedule, which would be replacing the A/B block schedule from 2023-24 and the 7-block from 2024-25. This schedule would have students taking the same four classes for 88 minutes every day, then switching to a different set of four classes in the next semester. This would apply to all classes with the exceptions of classes with exams at the end of the year and performance-based classes. If this schedule change were to be implemented, this would hurt everyone involved.

This schedule will make it so that many students will not retain knowledge in classes. If someone has their math class in the first semester of one year, then they have their next math class in the second semester of the next year, they will have a hard time remembering anything. This will make it so a lot of time will have to be spent on reviewing material instead of discussing new topics.

Another major flaw is the implementation of half-year classes, which would now be quarter year classes if this schedule is passed. Students will not retain any knowledge from a class if it only lasts one quarter! For reference, the quarter is ending on November 4th. Do you think you would be able to retain any knowledge from a class if it were to just last for two months?

Finally, this will make it harder on our already overworked guidance offices, who already struggled with scheduling this year in the 7-block. Since there will be some classes that run every other day, they won't be able to easily swap people into or out of these classes. If a student is struggling in an AP class, it will be incredibly difficult for them to swap into the non-AP version of that class due to them running on separate schedules. This is needlessly complicated!

This schedule was first proposed in 2022, but it was vehemently opposed by SPS educators. We were able to stop this once, and we can certainly do it again. To all AITE, Westhill, and Stamford High students: make your voice heard by signing this petition!
