Stop the Spread of Deepfake Porn in Massachusetts

Stop the Spread of Deepfake Porn in Massachusetts
The Issue
In Massachusetts and across the country, dangerous new technology is being weaponized against ordinary people. Deepfake pornography — computer-generated, nonconsensual intimate imagery — is spreading rapidly online. A recent report found that 98% of fake videos online fall into this category, with devastating consequences: harassment, humiliation, extortion, and lasting trauma for victims.
This week, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell co-led a bipartisan coalition of 47 attorneys general demanding that search engines and payment platforms take stronger steps to shut down the creation and distribution of this content. They called out companies that allow searches like “deepfake porn” or “nudify apps,” and urged payment processors to cut off sellers profiting from these abusive tools.
The danger is real and immediate. Deepfakes aren’t just a threat to celebrities or politicians — they are targeting students, workers, and young people right here in Massachusetts. Victims often discover their image has been manipulated only after the damage is done, with few avenues for redress. No one should live in fear that their face could be stolen and twisted into exploitative content.
Tech companies already block access to harmful searches like “how to build a bomb” or “how to kill yourself.” They can and must do the same for deepfake pornography. Protecting our communities from this abuse should not be optional.
We call on the Massachusetts Legislature, Governor Maura Healey, and Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell to strengthen state laws that ban the creation and distribution of nonconsensual deepfake pornography. We also call on Google, Microsoft, Apple, Visa, and Mastercard to immediately adopt safeguards that block searches for deepfake porn and cut off financial support to those who profit from it.
Massachusetts has always stood for dignity and decency. We cannot allow technology to outpace our protections.
Sign if you agree: Massachusetts must lead in ending deepfake abuse and protecting residents from exploitation.
