The Issue

I have always cherished the pristine beauty and purity of the environment in Whatcom County, particularly the watershed that provides water to families like mine. Recently, my concern has grown due to the application of herbicides in this critical area. These chemicals pose a significant threat to our drinking water, and this must be addressed immediately.

Herbicides, while used for controlling unwanted plants, can have far-reaching and sometimes devastating effects on ecosystems. When applied near or in watersheds, there is a high risk of these toxic substances contaminating our water supply. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), certain herbicides have been linked to adverse health effects, including cancer and hormone disruption. It is our responsibility to ensure that the water we consume is free from such potential dangers.

In Whatcom County, the watershed is a vital resource. It not only provides essential drinking water but also supports diverse flora and fauna. Spraying herbicides jeopardizes the delicate balance of this ecosystem and threatens the wildlife dependent on a clean environment. Furthermore, the community's health, particularly the most vulnerable populations, is at risk from these practices.

Research has shown that there are effective alternatives to harmful herbicide use, such as manual weed control, natural herbicide alternatives, or the implementation of integrated pest management strategies. Many communities have successfully adopted these methods, resulting in safer practices that protect both human health and the environment.

We must urge Whatcom County authorities to cease the use of chemical herbicides in our watershed immediately and explore these safer alternatives. By doing so, we can preserve our pure and valuable water resource for future generations and maintain the natural beauty and health of our environment.

Please join me in signing this petition to demand immediate action from Whatcom County officials to stop the spraying of herbicides in our precious watershed. Our drinking water and community's health depend on it.

Thanks for your advocacy and concern for our community’s health. I checked with our Public Works team regarding the spraying of herbicides in the Whatcom County Watershed and they shared the following information as it relates to recent activity: Whatcom County Code Chapter 12.48.030 designates certain areas of the county as "no-spray" zones. The code also allows the County Executive to approve exemptions for specific purposes. On May 27, 2026, the County Executive approved an exemption allowing herbicide use for the control of noxious and nuisance vegetation within right-of-way areas surrounding current and future guardrails located in designated no-spray areas. The planned application is not a broad roadside or ditch spraying program. Herbicide use within the designated no-spray areas will be limited to areas around guardrails that cannot be safely reached with tractor mowers. Repeated manual trimming in these locations would place employees in close proximity to moving traffic. The purpose of this work is to improve worker safety, maintain visibility for road users, and reduce the need for repeated maintenance throughout the growing season. The herbicides approved for use under the exemption are aquatic formulations labeled for application in or near water and applied in accordance with applicable federal and state requirements. Public Works has not conducted herbicide applications in roadside ditches within the Lake Whatcom watershed other than approved knotweed management activities. Again, thank you for your advocacy!
