The Issue

Residents of Ashburn Village, we are facing a pressing environmental and health concern. TruGreen, a company known for lawn care services, has been conducting harmful chemical spraying operations too close to our homes and in our community multiple times a year. This poses a serious risk to our community's well-being, particularly affecting residents, pets, and wildlife.

The chemicals used in these sprays, such as glyphosates, 2,4-D, Fluroxypyr, Dicamba, Prodiamine, Propane-1, 2 are associated with lymphoma, Parkinson’s, endocrine disruption, and other cancers that are harmful to people, pets, and wildlife. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), glyphosate has been classified as 'probably carcinogenic to humans'. Exposure to these chemicals can lead to a range of health issues, including respiratory problems, skin irritations, cancer, and more severe long-term effects.

Dogs are at much higher risk for cancer when exposed to these chemicals, as Dicamba itself is linked with a 70% increase in canine lymphoma.

In addition to health risks for children, adults, and pets, the chemical runoff can also negatively impact our natural environment. Nearby water bodies, local flora, and fauna could suffer from these toxic substances entering the ecosystem.

Wildlife is directly affected by these sprayings. When they spray the grass, the grass, soil, and bugs become toxic and contaminated. The birds eat the contaminated/toxic bugs and feed them to their nesting babies. Squirrels and rabbits forage in the grass, bunnies and baby ducks nest in the ground and eat from the grass. All wild animals and vital bugs, such as bees, are at risk for illness and death.

People are outside recreating on their patios or backyards, they grow fruits and vegetables intentionally without the use of chemical sprays, children and pets are in the backyards playing--- and suddenly a large spray vehicle comes around and sprays excessively and recklessly. The chemicals do not only stay on the grass as it is being sprayed, they travel airborne from the wind, covering more areas, exposing more people and private plants to the spray, even sending them into people's homes through open windows.

Residents in the 55+ homes have their private yards sprayed, exposing the elderly to health risks.

TruGreen has been spraying without legitimate warnings signs POST-application. There was a time when many paper picks would placed all over treated areas in our neighborhoods to alert residents that read "Warning/Keep Off" with an image of a baby and a dog, and that is no longer the case. Many residents come home from work and walk their children and pets in the freshly sprayed grass without awareness. This is irresponsible and lacks the protection and safety of the residents of the community. There also needs to be better communication PRE-application, warning residents WHERE exactly they are spraying and WHEN. A date range is unacceptable.

We urge local authorities of Ashburn Village to hear our plea to entirely discontinue the use of these harmful TruGreen chemicals. We encourage the implementation of stringent regulations to ensure that such activities do not compromise our health or the environment.

TruGreen has been sued for lying that their chemicals are safe for people and the environment. There are safer, environmentally-friendly alternatives available for lawn care that do not jeopardize our community’s health. Encouraging the use of organic and less harmful methods can significantly reduce the adverse effects associated with traditional chemical sprays.

Join us in safeguarding the health and environment of Ashburn Village. Your support can make a significant difference in advocating for a healthier, safer community. Please sign this petition to halt the harmful spraying practices of TruGreen near our homes and to promote safer alternatives.
