Stop The Spray Oak Island, North Carolina

The Issue

As residents and/or visitors of Oak Island, North Carolina we respectfully ask and petition our Council members to stop the current town practice of spraying toxic chemicals to try to control the mosquito population.

The practice is at best ineffective as it states on the label of the chemical used that it only kills adult mosquitoes that actively fly into the mist while it is sprayed.

The chemical, Biomist 3 + 15 ULV is considered - as stated on the label -  ‘highly toxic to bees and blooming crops. Runoff may be hazardous to fish and aquatic life’. It is recommended by the manufacturer that people and pets be inside during spraying.

This is an outdated practice and one that threatens other valuable insects and species. As a beach town with multiple waterways and aquatic life, as a sea turtle sanctuary and as a place where many people and pets enjoy the multitude of outdoor recreation opportunities, spraying toxic chemicals on a routine basis into the air and the ground is negligent at best.

We can and Must do better! There are environmentally safe alternatives that can be employed.
