The Issue

Babylon Village has been a great place to live, with beautiful views of the bay and a vibrant community. But Babylon is losing the safety of its neighborhoods critical  for use of Argyle Park and other open areas, safe travel to and from our schools, walks by individuals and families, bicycling, support of our restaurants, shops and other small businesses, and a feeling of peace on the neighborhood roads. Our quality of life is being taken from us by drivers who ignore the 25mph village speed limit and drive recklessly into, out of, and through the village, including on Deer Park Avenue, Main Street, Railroad Avenue, Park Avenue, and the local roads throughout the village many of which have sight limited turns.

On a typical Thursday, in a typical 15 minute span, we can see virtually every driver speeding past the 25mph sign and detector on Deer Park Avenue into the village, with speed carried through the neighborhood. All the detector does is prove the problem:

With the volume of pedestrians and reduced reaction times from speeding, each day Babylon has crashes or near misses. People are getting hurt and losing their lives. Making turns is unnecessarily dangerous and stressful. Just two recent examples:

Despite its best efforts, the Suffolk County Police Department cannot control the sheer volume of dangerous drivers tearing up and down our streets. The police department lacks the physical resources to put a dent in reckless driving in our village, and, of course, our police need to be able to use their resources for other important work.

The only solution is speed cameras, which give monetary fines but no points on licenses. They work. And a portion of the revenue from speeders can be used to fund our volunteer first responders. Drivers may complain at first, but then they adapt and slow down. Please sign this petition to help pressure village and state officials to install these life-saving devices.

In Manhattan and Queens, where reckless driving was a huge problem, a 25mph speed limit was created and speed cameras are used to enforce the limit. Traffic fatalities in the city are now at their lowest since 1910. In short, where there are cameras, drivers slow down and speeding plummets.

Here are some places where speed cameras could make a difference:

- Railroad Avenue where speeders fly towards and past the park, High School and train station

- W Main Street, near the intersection with Little East Neck Road, and the crosswalk between Argyle Park and the gazebo.

- E Main Street, where people often cross the road to get between the businesses lining the north and south sides of the road.

- Deer Park Avenue, where the road widens, and motorists often drive 40-50 mph and faster.

- Argyle Avenue, a common shortcut for people rushing to the train, where tight, blind curves and many pedestrians are a recipe for disaster.

- Reid Avenue, where motorists seek to avoid traffic on Main Street, and speed down a narrow road lined with houses, driveways, and parked cars.

- Prospect Street, another narrow road used by impatient motorists as an alternative to Main Street.

- Park Avenue, where speeders often strike other motorists attempting to cross or turn onto Park from side streets.

- Livingston Avenue, a common shortcut to Sunrise Highway.
