The Issue

We support road safety — but fairness, transparency, and community input matter too.

With 10 mobile Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras plus 20 fixed ASE cameras Vaughan. These fixed cameras are located on Regional roads and are part of a broader plan to install a total of 60 fixed cameras by the end of 2026.

With the cost of living rising. 60 new speed cameras seem more like a money grab targeting our community with extremely high fines

at $50,000 of tax payer money per camera

speed cameras  should be placed in school zones and on certain roads where safety is a real concern and DURING SCHOOL HOURS. But the issue is that many of the cameras being installed are on major roads that don’t even have sidewalks or heavy pedestrian traffic. That’s what makes it feels less about safety and more like a cash grab. It’s not about opposing safety — it’s about using common sense with placement.

Cameras have been installed along Rutherford Road, Islington Avenue, Major Mackenzie Drive, and nearby streets — often within short distances of each other or when THE SPEED CHANGES FROM 60 TO 50

Our concerns include:
-Multiple cameras on the same short stretch of road
-No public consultation or transparency prior to camera installation
-Cameras potentially used more for revenue than for safety
-Fines are ridiculously high

Studies by organizations such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists show that strategic, data-based deployment of traffic safety measures — not blanket enforcement — is most effective. Over-saturating residential areas with cameras may reduce driver attention, as drivers become more focused on spotting enforcement zones than watching the road itself.

What We’re Asking For:
We respectfully call on the City of Vaughan, York Region, and local traffic officials to:

-Conduct a formal review of current speed camera placements in the Vaughan area.

-lower fines

-Involve the community in traffic enforcement decisions through surveys, town halls, and transparent planning.

This is not a protest against road safety. On the contrary, we want to build a safer Vaughan for all residents — drivers, pedestrians, and families — through a smarter, more community-based approach.
