Stop the Speed Bumps on 1300 South!

Stop the Speed Bumps on 1300 South!
The Issue
Hello Neighbors -
The Salt Lake City Transportation Department has been given approval by Mayor Mendenhall to install a combination of eight (8) speed bumps and raised crosswalks on 1300 South from Emigration Market to Foothill Drive.
The project is scheduled to begin construction in July 2023. Residents who live on this street and in surrounding areas were not given proper notice and have not been allowed to have any input. Funds were siphoned off from another Sugar House project which doesn't follow normal city funding procedures. The approval process was fast-tracked though the Mayor's office and notice was only given to about 95 homes in the form of a small postcard just weeks before construction would begin.
We are petitioning the Mayor, the Salt Lake City Transportation Board and District 6's Councilman (Dan Dugan) to allow residents to cancel the construction start-date until we can have a proper say and vote in the matter.
1300 South is considered a "collector street" which means it's a vital road connecting parts of Salt Lake City to other major roads and neighborhoods. The current posted speed limit is 25 mph which was recently lowered from 30 mph. The 0.8 mile section of road already has 2 stop lights and 2 four-way stop signs. We do not need this type of barrier to vehicular traffic.
The cost of each concrete speed bump is $22,000 and the cost of each raised crosswalk is even more. The total project cost is at least $176,000.
Speed bumps have many negative impacts on neighborhoods including: noise pollution, poor drainage, icy conditions in winter, slower response rates from first responders, an increase in air pollution, bottle-necking traffic, and have even been proven to increase fatality rates for motorcyclists and bicyclists.
Please consider signing this petition if you live in the Wasatch Hollow, Yalecrest or Bonneville neighborhoods and oppose this project. Information from the city can be found below.
Thank you.

- UPDATE: It needs to be clarified that we are NOT against traffic calming measures. We understand the need to make our streets safe, but we are against the lack of transparency from the city and a lack of input from the community. We are asking UDOT and our elected officials to allow us to consider ALL traffic calming options before we commit to the installation of these permanent speed bumps.
