Stop the SPAM by Unsolicited Newspapers and Advertisement Now! Freedom of choice!
The issue
This goes out to everyone who cares about the environment and the impact of waste on our planet. Every day, people around the world receive unsolicited newspapers filled with advertisements that they never asked for and don't need. These newspapers contribute to the growing problem of waste and pollution, which affects us all.
In the Netherlands, consumers can easily opt-out of receiving unsolicited newspapers and advertising flyers in their mailboxes by indicating this through the use of a sticker on their mailbox (see here). This system has been very effective in reducing paper waste and preventing the distribution of unwanted advertising.
We believe that a similar system should be introduced worldwide. That's why we, the undersigned, call on governments and local authorities around the world to introduce a system similar to that currently in place in the Netherlands to reduce the amount of unsolicited newspapers and therefore the unnecessary waste of resources.
Tackling this problem of unsolicited newspapers won’t change much? Think again. In the city of Freiburg (Germany), for example, one of these newspapers is delivered every Sunday throughout the year. Each newspaper weighs about 330g and is delivered to 360,000 households. This amounts to a staggering 6177.6t of paper every year! And this is only one city! Most people take the paper out of their mailbox and directly throw it away or leave it lying around on the streets.
By taking action to reduce waste and promote more sustainable practices, we can make a real difference and create a better future for ourselves and future generations. We have the technology, knowledge, and resources to make a difference, but we need the political will to act.
Therefore, we urge governments and local authorities around the world to take action and introduce a system that allows consumers to easily opt-out of receiving unsolicited newspapers and advertising flyers. In fact “opt-out” should be the default.
Let's work together to reduce waste and protect our planet.
Thank you for your support.
