Stop The Southern Natural Gas’s SSE4 and Kinder Morgan’s MSX
The Issue
I live in a community where nature thrives alongside us. Our surroundings are dotted with lush greenery and wildlife. However, this balance is threatened by the impending Southern Natural Gas’s South System Expansion 4 (SSE4) and Kinder Morgan’s Mississippi Crossing (MSX). These projects propose significant infrastructural changes that could have disastrous impacts on our environment, our health, and our way of life.
The proposed expansion and construction will directly affect local wildlife, disturbing habitats and potentially leading to a decline in biodiversity. Species that have lived undisturbed for generations may soon find themselves without a home. Beyond wildlife, the people living in nearby areas, including myself and my family, face risks of decreased air quality and increased pollution due to the potential increase in industrial activity.
Studies have shown that such projects can lead to significant emissions of methane and other pollutants, contributing to poor air quality and exacerbating respiratory issues in community members. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, methane alone is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period when it comes to warming the planet.
Moreover, the construction activities will likely lead to soil degradation, water contamination, and increased noise pollution. These environmental impacts can have far-reaching effects on human health and the local ecosystem. The peace and serenity we now enjoy in our community should not be compromised for projects that primarily benefit corporate interests.
We urge the authorities to reconsider these expansions and prioritize the health and well-being of citizens and the environment. There are alternatives to these projects that could meet energy demands without harming our natural habitats and communities.
Our call is for responsible action. Let us press for more stringent environmental assessments and consider cleaner, more sustainable solutions. Our community's future does not have to be sacrificed in the name of progress. We stand together to protect the place we call home.
