Stop the Sorell Men's Shed Relocation

Stop the Sorell Men's Shed Relocation
The issue
The Sorell Council has mandated the relocation of the Sorell Men's Shed to the rural area of Penna, presenting a severe challenge for many of our members. For those unfamiliar with the area, the Sorell Men's Shed is more than just a physical space; it’s a lifeline for countless individuals who find companionship and purpose there. This sudden move threatens our very existence.
Our Shed provides a vital community service, offering a haven for men to come together, share skills, stories, and support one another through life’s difficulties. Most importantly, it is a sanctuary for the elderly and those experiencing social isolation. However, relocating to Penna, a sparsely populated locality with limited public transportation, presents a significant barrier to accessibility.
The heart of the issue lies in the fact that a considerable number of our members do not possess a car or are unable to drive. For them, the Shed in its current Sorell location is easily accessible and forms a crucial part of their weekly routine. They rely on public transportation to socialise, engage in activities, and participate in projects that give their days structure and purpose.
By forcing our relocation, the Sorell Council is effectively disenfranchising these members. We are not merely losing a building; we are risking the essence of the community and the support network that many depend on. The Council's decision was made without sufficiently consulting members or considering the significant impact it will have on their lives.
We acknowledge the need for infrastructure development, but it must not come at the expense of some of the most vulnerable members of our community. We propose that the Sorell Council engage in a dialogue with us to explore alternative solutions, such as acquiring a more centrally-located site within Sorell or improving transportation links to Penna before any relocation takes place.
The Sorell Men's Shed is essential to the health, wellbeing, and social fabric of our community. We need your support to convince the Sorell Council to reconsider and collaborate with us to find a practical solution.
Please sign this petition to help protect our cherished community asset from forced relocation and keep it accessible to all its members.
