The Issue

As someone deeply affected by the devastating implications of food shaming, I urge society to change its paradoxical relationship with food.

We need to remember how agriculture - both animal and vegetable - played a pivotal role in shaping our society. It made us more than dispersed families or clans, uniting us as a nexus of interconnected nations. Whereas cultural exchanges and collaboration flourished thanks to these agricultural advancements, unfortunately, so did food shaming.

Our relationship with food is emotional, often connected to our identity, and imposing guilt or shame about personal food choices can lead to severe health conditions, including gastric reflux, allergies, anorexia, bulimia, depression, and anxiety.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that worldwide, the prevalence of anorexia nervosa and bulimia is 0.4% and 1.3% among young women respectively, diseases that are primarily triggered by societal pressures related to food and body image. Furthermore, the French Institute of Health and Medical Research points towards a trend of increased levels of depression and anxiety in societies possessing more rigid dietary rules and behaviors, often leading to further biological complications.

We need to move towards a world that allows people to realize that change, especially dietary, must come from personal choices, not from societal guilt tripping or shaming. We must uphold our core humanity that understands and values every individual's unique relationship with food without passing judgments.

Kindness starts from within our species, not at the edge of it.

We should embrace our differences, including our varying dietary choices, and remember that each person's food choices should be respected.

So, today, we urge those condemning others for their unique food choices to reflect on the negative drive behind their comments and campaign against the social shaming of food choices.
