Stop the social media ban for under 16s in Australia

Stop the social media ban for under 16s in Australia
The issue
Social media is my lifeline. It's where I communicate with all my friends, share moments, and stay updated on what’s happening in their lives. The proposed social media ban in Australia for those under 16 will disrupt the way countless teens connect and bond with their friends. If this ban goes through, my connection with friends won’t be the same, and millions of other young Australians will face the same loss.
In today's digital age, social media is not just a tool for entertainment; it’s a crucial platform for communication, education, and staying informed about the world. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 90% of teenagers use social media to maintain friendships, collaborate on school projects, and be part of close-knit communities. Removing this access without adequate alternatives is denying us a fundamental way to interact and grow.
While we acknowledge the need to ensure online safety for young people, an outright ban is not the solution. We call for more balanced approaches such as enhancing digital literacy programs in schools, setting up strict online safety protocols, and encouraging parental supervision rather than prohibiting access to social media entirely.
It's paramount to preserve the freedom for young Australians to choose how they communicate with their peers. We therefore urge the Australian Government to reconsider this ban and implement more effective and less disruptive measures to protect our youth online.
Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support for maintaining social connections for those under 16 and to protect our rights to communicate and express ourselves freely through social media. Together, we can find a better way to ensure safety without sacrificing connection.
