Stop the Silence, Protect the Voiceless: Ending Animal Cruelty Starts with Us
The Issue
The outraging and widespread news report of Filipinos torturing and killing animals poses an alarming and significant concern on how we should be treating our pets as they have a life to live too.
Animal cruelty is not all about the worst case scenarios a human can do to animals, it can start with how they neglect their responsibility on giving animals a shelter or food, may it be their own or not. This indifference shapes the society’s perception that treating animals differently is “fine,” which then leads to them holding the power to abuse them more, with the animals having no chance to fight back and only scream or a trembling bark to ask for help.
In a report of Zaldarriaga (2025), there was an incident that occurred in Marikina City where the citizen brutally kicked the cat, leading to its ultimate death, which Senator Grace Poe considered as a “barbaric act.” Another news report coming from GMA Integrated News (2025), a vendor in Subic, Zambales, fatally stabbed a dog after it allegedly stole meat from her stall.
This issue calls for accountability, responsibility, and an immediate action to change how humans perceive pets and treat them with love and respect. These acts violate the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 and the Philippine Animal Welfare Act of 2013, which ensure the safeguarding of animals from abuse, neglect, mistreatment, and harm. The people involved in animal abuse must face the corresponding consequences on their actions. If this problem continues to exist, animals can no longer have a safe environment for them to live in, and humans can have the capability to kill other people as well.
PAWS released a statement regarding how people who commit acts of violence against animals can also pose a risk to society, as cruelty toward animals is often linked to the potential for harming humans. Taking a stand against animal abuse is not just about protecting animals—it also helps safeguard the well-being of the community. Advocating against such cruelty is not only a moral responsibility but also an essential step in creating a safer and more just society.
One could stop animal cruelty through:
- Being a responsible pet owner.
- Reporting animal cruelty, abuse, and neglect.
- Giving pets a chance to eat, drink, and providing shelter.
- Raising awareness and educating people on how to treat animals with respect.
- Demanding stricter laws to protect animals.
Change the world’s imperfections by starting with your own simple ways. Taking an action now means we can break the cycle of cruelty and build a society where animals are treated with the kindness and respect they deserve. By standing up against animal abuse, we not only protect innocent lives but also create a more compassionate and humane world for future generations. Every act of care—whether it’s reporting abuse, providing shelter, or educating others—creates a ripple effect that strengthens our communities. Let us be the voice for the voiceless because when we protect them, we uplift the very essence of humanity itself.
