Stop the San Juan Bautista "Basaan" Festival Disruptive Water-Throwing Tradition

The Issue

We appeal to the municipality and/or city leaders of San Juan to reconsider the continuation of the annual "Basaan" tradition, a part of the San Juan Bautista Festival. While it is recognized as part of the city's culture, it has been causing considerable inconvenience to non-participating residents and commuters, particularly those headed to work, individuals carrying sensitive documents, gadgets, and those suffering from illnesses. This practice entails throwing pails of water at people in the streets, often without regard for individual circumstances or consent. Although cultural preservation is crucial, it should never come at the expense of the welfare of the community or the rights of individuals. We believe it is possible to honor traditions while ensuring that they evolve in a manner that respects current societal norms and individual rights. Economic productivity could be compromised during this event due to damaged gadgets and documents, as well as employees unable to attend work due to being drenched. Additionally, the possibility of health risks, especially for sick individuals who may become sicker as a result of getting wet, should not be overlooked. Let's reimagine this festival in a way that celebrates the vibrant spirit of San Juan, preserves the cultural significance of the event, but does so without the potentially harmful and invasive water-throwing element. Please sign this petition to ensure the safety, respect, and general well-being of all San Juan's citizens, commuters, and stakeholders.
