The Issue

Growing up and living in Windsor, Ontario, I have always found solace and community in our vibrant public parks. These green spaces are crucial for both environmental health and local history. Recently, to my dismay, Windsor, a city already struggling with the lowest canopy coverage in all of Canada, has begun selling off these precious parks.

The sale began with portions of Kinsmen Park, land that was gifted to the city under the promise that it would forever remain a park. Instead, parts are being sold to fund alleged upgrades, ignoring the original gift's intention. Now, there’s a proposal to sell Whelpton Park, a vital piece of our local heritage as it stands in Ford City, the birthplace of the Rand Formula, a landmark in labour history. Removing these parks erases the very green spaces that bind our history and community spirit.

Public parks like Kinsmen and Whelpton are more than mere patches of land. They are lifelines, crucial for community events, relaxation, and maintaining biodiversity. They offer refuge to many residents who rely on these spaces for recreational activities, fostering mental and physical well-being.

Moreover, selling these lands strips Windsor of its natural beauty and hinders efforts to enrich our city's canopy coverage. The park sales contradict common goals of preserving and enhancing green spaces. Instead of selling, the city should focus on sustainable initiatives to preserve and even expand existing park areas.

The actions being considered by Windsor's city officials not only challenge the integrity of promises made but also threaten to rob future generations of the joys these parks provide. The short-term financial gains cannot compensate for the long-term environmental and cultural loss.

We urge the city of Windsor to stop selling our public parks for quick profits and to honor their commitment to preserving these vital spaces. We need to protect our parks for the future health, history, and happiness of the Windsor community.

Please sign this petition to ensure that Windsor’s parks remain untouched, for us, our children, and our environment.
