Stop the sale of nut and peanut products in airports
Why this petition matters
Anaphylaxis UK state that 1 in 50 children and 1 in 200 adults suffer from a nut allergy in the UK. People who suffer from these allergies, like myself, can react from not only eating them but breathing them in the air. For me and many others, the breathing in of nut or peanut particles is enough to cause anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction which can cause symptoms including breathing difficulties which progress very quickly and, without hospital intervention, can lead to death.
I recently went on holiday and was surprised to see how many peanut and nut products were available to purchase in Duty free and airport shops both in the UK and in America. Many people would assume that you would be able to eat the snack you have purchased in the airport on the plane so I understand the disappointment people may feel when the announcement is made to request they don’t. With the recycled air and close proximity on a flight, it is crucial that these products are not opened when a passenger with an allergy is on board.
When anaphylaxis occurs, epipens are not a cure, they only buy time until proper medical treatment can be received. When on a plane, it is particularly risky as there is not quick access to a hospital.
This petition strives to have the selling of peanut and nut products banned in UK airports to protect those with allergies.
