The Issue

Many guinea pig owners are deeply aware of the challenges these gentle creatures face. Visiting countless pet stores, we've witnessed firsthand how guinea pigs that are sick and neglected often languish without proper care. Even more concerning is the alarming number of guinea pigs overflowing in animal rescues, desperately in need of loving homes. This distressing scenario continues to unfold partly because pet stores contribute to the problem by offering guinea pigs for sale without ensuring their well-being.

Guinea pigs, albeit small, have specific needs that are often overlooked when they're treated merely as commercial goods. The current system encourages impulsive purchases by individuals who may not fully comprehend the responsibility of caring for these animals. Furthermore, it exacerbates the issue of neglect and abandonment, as many owners end up surrendering their pets when the novelty wears off or when care becomes burdensome.

According to a report by the ASPCA, small animals, including guinea pigs, are the third most abandoned pets in shelters across America. This indicates a significant gap between ownership and responsible pet care. When pet stores focus on sales without proper education or follow-up, the outcome is dire for these innocent animals. They deserve better than to become another statistic in an already overwhelmed rescue system.

Stopping the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores could significantly reduce the number abandoned or handed over to rescues. Instead, potential pet owners could be directed towards adoption from shelters or rescues, where they receive guidance on proper guinea pig care. This not only ensures that adopters are better prepared for the lifetime commitment of pet ownership but also helps curtail overpopulation in shelters.

Many pet store guinea pigs also come from large-scale breeders where animals are often kept in poor conditions, with little attention to health, proper socialization, or genetic care. At the same time, shelters and rescues are overwhelmed with guinea pigs that were purchased on impulse and later surrendered when owners realize the level of care they require. Continuing to sell guinea pigs in pet stores fuels this cycle by increasing demand for breeding while countless healthy, social guinea pigs wait in rescues for homes. Ending pet store sales would reduce overbreeding, discourage impulse purchases, and help shift the focus toward adoption and responsible ownership.

We urge pet store owners and legislators to take immediate action. Implement policies that stop the sale of guinea pigs and similar pets, encouraging a stronger focus on responsible pet ownership and adoption. By doing this, we can foster a humane society where animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve.
