The Issue

The Frenchmen Street Community Garden (Instagram here) is not just a garden; it's the lifeline of our community. Located on the lots 1201 Frenchmen St and 2107 Marais St, it has been a safe haven where an intergenerational volunteer network gathers to enrich our neighborhood. With over 2,500 pounds of organic produce annually, this garden ensures that our elders have access to fresh, healthy food. Every day, it offers daily access to free-range eggs, grounds to absorb stormwater through a complex bioswale system, and a thriving space for 23 community trees, furthering both the canopy and food availability.

The garden's solar infrastructure provides emergency resilience, becoming a beacon of hope and sustainability in times of crisis. It is a hub for essential neighborhood activities including recycling drives, cleanup initiatives, and plant exchange programs that unite and uplift our community.

Yet, this invaluable asset is under immediate threat. In what we believe to be a concerning move against legal norms, the realtor for Neighborhood Housing Services, Krissy Young-Boyd (brokered by Delisha Boyd LLC) listed and accepted offers on both lots for a mere $15,000 each—within 24 hours of listing in 2026. This hasty transaction, allegedly concluded without appropriate procedural rigor, risks dismantling a cornerstone of our community and violates public trust. Moreover, it violates the strict conveyance on behalf of the city of New Orleans as part of the Donated Sale of Adjudicated Properties (DOAP) program following Hurricane Katrina.

We call upon Mayor Moreno's office to step in urgently. We urge them to file legal action to challenge the sale of these parcels per stipulations on the conveyance and save this vital community garden. Our community's health, resiliency, and spirit depend on reclaiming and preserving this crucial piece of land.

Please join us in safeguarding the Frenchmen Street Community Garden. Sign this petition to oppose this sale and to protect the heart of our community for generations to come. Your support can make the difference!
