Every day, numerous animals are sold through Gumtree, a popular online marketplace, without adequate checks and balances for welfare, health, and ethical treatment. Instances of animal cruelty, neglect, and unlawful practices have been reported, traced back to purchases made on this platform. The RSPCA reported over 6500 calls in 2018 related to animals bought online, demonstrating the severity of this issue (RSPCA, 2018 Report). Gumtree currently does lack strict regulations regarding the sale of animals which thus jeopardizes animal safety and welfare. We must urge Gumtree to cease all sales of animals on their platform and put animal welfare before profit.
